Winter Equinox Tea

from £7.00

Ingredients: Echinacea, Thyme, Elecampane, Calendula

Add a teaspoon to a cup or mug of freshly boiled water, or the same amount per person if adding to a teapot. Cover with a saucer or the teapot lid and leave to steep for ten minutes for a therapeutic brew. Drink when you feel under the weather to boost low immunity.

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, Winter is associated with the Water element and the corresponding organs of the kidneys and the bladder.  This is a time when we are drawn inward and encouraged to restore ourselves with deep rest and warm, nourishing foods while the natural world is sleeping.  Often at this time of year we succumb to viruses and infections.  This tea contains a mixture of warming herbs that support immunity and help the body recover from illness.

Echinacea is a strong immune-enhancing herb that helps to fight off disease.  It is best used in the early stages of illnesses such as a cold or the ‘flu.

Thyme supports the lymphatic system, in particular the Thymus gland, which is a key part of the immune system.  It fights off infection and is particularly effective for upper respiratory conditions such as sore throats as well as chest complaints.

Elecampane is a gently warming herb that supports the kidney and bladder.  It is traditionally used as an expectorant for respiratory conditions, especially wet coughs.  It is antimicrobial, helping to fight off infection.  It is also used as a tonic for convalescence, and its inulin content acts as a prebiotic, helping to feed the good bacteria in your gut and boosting immunity.

Calendula is a wonderful lymphatic remedy, used for swollen glands to support free-flowing lymph.  It is anti-inflammatory, anti-septic and anti-fungal.  It can be used for sore throats and upper respiratory conditions.  It’s beautiful orange flowers are rich in beta-carotene and add some midsummer warmth to a winter tea.
